چکیده

[1] We have determined by first principles the athermal elastic constant tensor, single crystal and aggregated acoustic velocities, and anisotropy of the recently discovered post-perovskite MgSiO3 polymorph. This phase may be the most abundant mineral in the D00 region. We find that the post-perovskite phase has similar bulk modulus and larger shear modulus than perovskite at relevant pressures. This phase is remarkably anisotropic. Analyses of horizontal shear wave splittings in transversely isotropic aggregates indicate that diverse lattice preferred orientations could produce large variation in anisotropy consistent with seismic observations in D00.

Elastic anisotropy of experimental analogues of perovskite and post-perovskite help to interpret D′′ diversity

Recent studies show that the D'' layer, just above the Earth's core-mantle boundary, is composed of MgSiO3 post-perovskite and has significant lateral inhomogeneity. Here we consider the D'' diversity as related to the single-crystal elasticity of the post-perovskite phase. We measure the single-crystal elasticity of the perovskite Pbnm-CaIrO3 and post-perovskite Cmcm-CaIrO3 using inelastic X-r...

Sound velocities and elasticity of aluminous MgSiO3 perovskite: Implications for aluminum heterogeneity in Earth’s lower mantle

[1] Aluminum has been reported to have a remarkably strong effect on the thermoelastic properties of MgSiO3 perovskite. However, the sound velocities of aluminous MgSiO3 perovskite have not been previously measured, even though this phase likely dominates most of the chemistry in Earth’s lower mantle. Here we report the first sound velocity measurements on aluminous MgSiO3 perovskite using Bril...

Elasticity of AlFeO(3) and FeAlO(3) perovskite and post-perovskite from first-principles calculations

[1] We use state‐of‐the‐art ab initio calculations based on the generalized gradient approximation of the density functional theory in the planar augmented wavefunction formalism to determine the elastic constants tensor of perovskite and post‐perovskite with formulas AlFeO3 and FeAlO3 in which Fe or Al respectively occupy only octahedral sites, for the stable magnetic configurations. The phase...

Ab initio elasticity and thermal equation of state of MgSiO3 perovskite

We have used high-temperature ab initio molecular dynamic simulations to study the equation of state of orthorhombic MgSiO3 perovskite under lower mantle pressure^temperature conditions. We have determined the Gru«neisen parameter, Q, as a function of volume. Our state-of-the-art simulations, accurate to within 10%, resolve the long-standing controversy on thermal expansion (K) and Gru«neisen p...

High-pressure sound velocities and elasticity of aluminous MgSiO3 perovskite to 45 GPa: Implications for lateral heterogeneity in Earth’s lower mantle

[1] Brillouin scattering measurements on aluminous magnesium silicate perovskite, arguably the most abundant phase in Earth, have been performed to 45 GPa in a diamond anvil cell at room temperature, using methanol-ethanol-water and neon as pressure transmitting media. The experiments were performed on a polycrystalline sample of aluminous MgSiO3 perovskite containing 5.1 ± 0.2 wt.% Al2O3. The ...
